HELENA – Daniel Thompson put all the Montana Millionaire tickets he bought in the visor of his truck.

Except one.

So when the retired Montana Air National Guard veteran from Great Falls checked his tickets after returning home from a holiday trip, he didn’t think he won. All the tickets were purchased from Kernaghan’s Pik & Pump – where he knew the winning ticket was sold. But none of them were a winner.

“There was one ticket in the bottom of the center console,” Thompson said. “I opened that up, saw that number and I didn’t know what to think.”

He knew he’d won.

Thompson and his wife Marcia routinely play Montana Millionaire – the Montana-only raffle game invented ten years ago by the Montana Lottery to guarantee a million dollar winner in our state each year. Thompson would buy a Montana Millionaire ticket at Kernaghan’s Pik & Pump on 8th Ave. North in Great Falls.

All the tickets were still in his truck when the couple went to visit their daughter and son-in-law in Arkansas over the holidays. They were gone on December 29 when the Montana Lottery drew the winning numbers – but they were following along.

Their son-in-law showed them the winning numbers. And they knew the winning ticket was bought at Kernaghan’s. They also knew that no one had come forward to claim the prize.

When the couple got home, they checked their tickets; none of the ones in the visor were a winner. Thompson knew he had one more ticket, but he didn’t dig it out before he had to send his truck to the shop.

Thompson didn’t check that ticket until Monday.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

The Thompsons have seven kids and 15 grandchildren. They have plans for their winnings: Pay off the house. Get a second home near other family. But a lot of things won’t change.

Marcia Thompson isn’t planning on quitting her job as a certified nurse’s assistant.

As it happens, this is not the first time the Thompsons have won a Montana Lottery prize. Marcia Thompson won a red-and-white Ford F-150 pick-up truck from a Montana Lottery Second Chance Drawing at MontanaFair in Billings in 1994.

The Montana Lottery was created by referendum in 1986. Since then, it has paid over $497 million in prizes and returned approximately $224 million to the State of Montana.

HELENA – The Montana Lottery is off to a good start and handed out more than $40,000 during the first week of the new year.

On Tuesday, Patricia Dunmire, of Butte, won $10,000 on a Montana Millionaire ticket. The winning ticket was purchased at the Thriftway Super Stop #8 on Continental Drive in Butte.

Michael Welch, of Whitehall, claimed a $10,000 prize off of a Montana Millionaire ticket on Wednesday. This year, he decided to purchase his ticket in Anaconda, and it paid off! The winning ticket was sold at the Anaconda Liquor Store on Main Street in Anaconda.

Welch, a teacher at Anaconda Job Corps, wasn’t positive his ticket was a winner. He thought maybe the zero in front of his ticket number meant it was a different number than the one posted without. He went back to the retailer and the machine told him he needed to head to Helena, which means one thing, he was a winner! He plans to use the money to pay some bills.

Jonah Runsthrough, of Havre, won $24,268 on Thursday playing Big Sky Bonus. The winning ticket was purchased at the Holiday #272 on West First Street in Havre.
