The whole state may be covered in smoke, but Michael Williams isn’t paying any attention to the weather. He won a $14,000 prize with a “Limited Edition Gold $14,000 Montana Crossword” scratch ticket purchased at the Cedar Street Conoco, 1701 Cedar St; Helena.

Michael has an unorthodox Lottery purchase method. He only buys a ticket if the person in front of him has bought a winning ticket. On Friday, Michael was behind a winner, and bought a ticket that turned out to be a $4 winning ticket. On Sunday, he was behind a winner again, and parlays Friday’s ticket for two tickets on Sunday. One was the $14,000 winner! He did try and call his Mom first to tell her the good news, but she didn’t answer, so he called his Dad.

Michael plans to use his Lottery winnings to finish paying off his car, and pay off his parents car as well. He’ll have a little left over, and says he plans to “indulge.” Michael also said, “It’s like getting a raise, with that car paid off.”

The Montana Lottery was created by referendum in 1986. Since then, it has paid over $497 million in prizes and returned approximately $224 million to the State of Montana.

The summer harvest might be close to over in Winifred, but not for Dale Smith, who won $25,000 a year for life with a Lucky For Life ticket purchased at the Winifred Grocery, 201 Main St; Winifred.

When Dale stopped by the grocery store, he was told he should "head home and check his ticket", because the grocery store knew they'd sold a winning ticket, and Dale's just one of a couple who play Lucky For Life in Winifred. So Dale called his wife and said, "check it out, we may have won $5,000." But she checks a little deeper, and says "You'd better come home."

Once Dale saw the numbers and the prize, he called his daughters and they planned a trip to Helena to collect their prize.

Once in town, the family decided to take the prize as a lump sum, which came to over $390,000 before taxes. Dale told us his wife and daughters spent the whole trip planning how to spend the money, and shopping for cars. When asked if they were going to stay and celebrate in Helena, the Smiths said no, they needed to get home to have a party with their four brothers.

This is the third $25,000 a year for life ticket that has been sold in Montana. Lucky for Life is the newest draw game product introduced by the Montana Lottery since Mega Millions was introduced in 2010. Lucky for Life boasts a top prize of $1,000 a day for life, payable as an annuity or lump sum and a secondary prize of $25,000 a year for life, payable as an annuity or lump sum.

The Montana Lottery was created by referendum in 1986. Since then, it has paid over $497 million in prizes and returned approximately $224 million to the State of Montana.

James Schiewek of Missoula had to check his ticket "about 20 times" to make sure, but now he believes "it's happening to me." James claimed the largest Montana Cash Jackpot ever, $410,000, with a ticket purchased at Fast Trip, 2730 South Reserve St., Missoula.

It took a little time for James to come to grips with his win, and it still hasn't really sunk in yet. He did manage to have a celebratory BBQ of Brats and Tri-Tip with his friends, and is still in shock his $1 Quick Pick ticket paid off so big.

James was very quick to know where this money was going. "It's going to pay for my daughter's college education." But there will be enough left over so that James can use some of the jackpot winnings to take a road trip to Canada as well.

The Montana Lottery was created by referendum in 1986. Since then, it has paid over $483 million in prizes and returned approximately $217 million to the State of Montana.
